ActivHeal Aquafiber Ag, proven to be an effective antimicrobial dressing of choice

This article reports on how the ActivHeal Aquafiber Ag dressing performs on a diverse range of patients with complex infected and non-infected wounds.

The management of exudates is an essential requirement in wound care. It is vital that an optimal moist wound environment is created and that the surrounding skin is protected from maceration and the subsequent risk of infection. ActivHeal Aquafiber Ag is a high gelling antimicrobial dressing that has the ability to absorb high levels of exudate whilst maintaining a moist wound environment. The addition of silver ions results in a dual purpose dressing that is proven to be effective at exudate management, as well as being effective in eradicating a broad spectrum of microorganisms including antibiotic resistant strains such as MRSA, MRSE and VRE.

A product evaluation was carried on the ActivHeal Aquafiber Ag antimicrobial dressing to evaluate ease of use, conformability to the wound, patient comfort during wear and ease of removal. Clinician satisfaction was reviewed in terms of wear time, ability to stay in place as well as well as wound progression, exudates levels, quality of the peri-wound skin, clinical signs of infection and the clinicians overall acceptance of the dressings characteristics and their view of its overall performance.

The study was carried out on a cohort of 37 patients from clinics in four locations throughout the UK. A diverse range of patients was included with complex infected and non infected wounds. The results of the study demonstrated a number of positive endpoints for both the primary and secondary objectives of the study, resulting in the overall conclusion from clinicians that ActivHeal Aquafiber Ag is safe, performs well and is efficacious in managing wound exudate, maintaining a moist wound environment and controlling the wound bioburden in both acute and chronic wounds.
